Album Thoughts
I've listened to Mouth Sounds and I still don't know if I'm ready...
EDIT: I wasn’t.
Song Notes
Goodbye
- What an incredible, building, burgeoning intro.
- What an incredibly silly payoff.
Rollercloser
- Two songs I never expected to hear in the same room, let alone the same album, and yet here they are… in one song.
Furries
- Oooh, what a cool Jimi Hendrix drop into…
- Oh man the theming here is hilarious.
Friends
- I should not have been drinking something during this little piece because I almost wrong-piped myself.
Best
- I think this is the most complex composition so far, but it works really, really well!!
- This shit is blowing my mind.
Pokémon
- The newscasters being edited to fit the beat of the music is so subtle, but such a masterful touch!
- The descent into madness about Pokémon madness is hilarious.
- The choice of “ABC (1-2-3)” is also impossibly strong.
Sexual Lion King
- No way, there was absolutely no way that the title could have prepared me for this.
- Please listen.
Crocodile Chop
- Is this what it’s like to have a stroke?
Transmission
- A welcome reprieve in this storm.
Love Psych
- The wild intensity of the strings with the B-52s doing their insanity is…
- I dunno, but I really needed the break before this.
- I would hate to listen to this overstimulated.
Orgonon Gurlz
- Much more comprehensible, much less suspenseful, but I had to listen to Katy Perry. :(
- In all seriousness, this is another wild one, damn.
Born to Cat
- These little interludes feel like a jester doing a little jingly dance in a single spotlight on stage while a dude plays the harmonica, and you’ve just been subjected to a spectacle so baffling and entertaining as to almost be worrisome.
What Is It
- After a while, you hear a distinctive intro to a song and reflexively brace yourself for whatever the mashup is gonna be, and it’s awesome.
It’s
- Bon Jovi over a parade promenade. Okay, sure.
Close to the Sun
- This works so much better than it should, but I should expect that from Muse.
Numbers
- This one is dense!
- Carly Rae Jepsen, Cake, Ghostbusters, some commercial jingles…
- I started with my head in my hands, but I feel like I’ve got my footing again, which will make the next inevitable sucker punch worse, even if I can anticipate a sucker punch coming.
Space Monkey Mafia
- I was right.
- This is what it feels like for an album to punch you directly in the brain - fuzzy, detuned, confused.
Wndrwll
- And the unexpected straight punch for a start.
- And then BEAUTIFUL guitar, and using the vocals as harmony.
- I think this one is my favorite.
- GOD DAMMIT, THE FULL HOUSE THEME.
Piss
- And the lead into Mouth Sounds.
- What a magnificent capstone of a shitpost.
- A big ol’ cherry on top of a massively stupid, brilliantly baked cake.
General Thoughts
- I’m interested in what themes may be upcoming…
- There’s a general understanding of how the brain processes music that I wish a lot of music producers on display here.
- I think this might be an album I recommend to people as something to get to know me. This is hilarious and mad and incredible.
- Neil knows a thing or two about pacing.
This whole deal feels like boxing two guys in a ball pit. They can change which one is invisible at any given time, you can never get your footing, and in between rounds, a little jester pops out and does a silly little song and dance.
