Album Thoughts
Alrighty, time for Neil to kick the shit out of my brain again.
Song Notes
The Starting Line
- Ahhh, the world…
- Good grief, this one is really dense.
- There’s not a lot of silliness here, it’s just really, really solid!
Floor Corn
- And here’s the silliness.
- The “Let the Bodies Hit the Floor” buildup is insane in this one, especially with the added rising percussion.
AC/VC
- This one is like a bat to the brain.
- Brian Johnson’s screeching is so out of place literally anywhere outside of AC/DC.
300MB
- Three Hundred of God’s Own Mega Bytes
- The mysterious, awe-inspiring chords phasing in and out of the background add a powerful mystique to this one.
Revolution #5
- This break was less needed, though maybe what’s upcoming needs deep preparation…
Dear Dinosaur
- Deeply silly, but also very relaxing.
Annoyed Grunt
- Theeeeere it is.
- God dammit, we got the Home Improvement theme with Tim Allen grunting, Homer’s belch and “D’oh!”, Mungo Jerry…
- And friggin’ Rammstein aparently. Yoshi??
- I wish this didn’t rule.
- David Lee Roth???????
- I would hate this if I were overstimulated.
- That outro with Ernie Hudson has me worried.
Bustin
- Ghost Busters theme remixed.
- And there it is. A straight punch to the dome. Knowing it was coming didn’t help.
- The swap to being about sleeping is objectively hilarious.
Blockbuster
- A gasp as I break the surface of the water.
Busta
- The usage of Stairway to Heaven as the instrumental is making me wonder what the blow up is gonna be…
- This one is crazy work for how well it meshes.
Tiger
- Truly an incredible mashup here.
- I don’t know why I didn’t expect Tony the Tiger in this one.
The End
- Okay, Neil, I know you’re lying.
- A delightful romp, actually.
Shady Interlude
- These interludes have stopped being relaxing.
- They just make me wonder what the punch is gonna be.
T.I.M.E.
- The worried look I just gave my speakers when the vocals of “Y.M.C.A” started playing…
- Ah, yes, the Inception theme. Welcome to the fight, Hans Zimmer.
Smooth
- Okay, why the Canadian National Anthem?
- I guess the Barenaked Ladies is why.
- Honestly, the rapidfire lyrics over “Annie Are You Okay” works surprisingly well.
- Love that I hate that I love it, again.
- And there’s Smooth.
Stand by Meme
- I wasn’t expecting “One Week” to keep up through a second song in a row.
Wallspin
- More “Wonderwall”, here we go…
- This one is so good, I think it might be my favorite.
Wow Wow
- Here’s some bobbing and weaving.
- I’m off my damn feet.
- This is weird in the best ways, the chord progression is monstrous.
- YO, THE SYNTH SOLO.
- No, this one is the favorite, easily.
Mouth Pressure
- God the buildup is killing me.
- I knew he wanted me to know but doubt, and it doesn’t help.
Shit
- Ah, the sequel to Piss. A “number 2”, if you will.
- “Kiss From a Rose”, “Everybody Dance Now”, “Pretty Fly for a White Guy”, “Wannabe”, “Hollaback Girl”…
- I can’t keep up with everything. I simply can’t.
- Oh, this fucks. Back to the wild density.
General Thoughts
- This one’s taking a minute to take a swing at me. I feel like I’m ducking and weaving while he just… stands there… menacingly.
- So far, this is much more mellow than Mouth Silence. So far.
- I truly can’t imagine what the background music in Neil Cicierega’s head is like at any given moment.
- Part of what’s so impressive is that it’s not just the chord progressions that he makes work, but the interplay between vocal syncopation and instrumental syncopation. It’s kind of freakishly good.
