Album Thoughts
I'm aware that these are somewhat notorious mashup albums, and I'm even more aware of the Notorious Neil Cicierega, who is reponsible for more internet nostalgia and humor than almost any other individual.
Song Notes
Promenade (Satellite Pictures at an Exhibition)
- Should I have expected anything less than starting on “All Star”?
- It feels almost like a cathedral experience.
Modest Mouth
- And I should have expected more “All Star” for the second, honestly.
- Taking it in rounds in the left and right channels is cool!
D’oh
- So this is a lot more than just mashups, lmao. Incroyable.
- BUTTS AN’ I CAN NOT LIE
Vivid Memories Turn to Fantasies
- OH, what a drop!
- The Men In Black theme??? Some PULLS in this one.
Bills Like Jean Spirit
- I feel like this one’s gonna surprise me…
- This feels like a signal that I’m gonna love how much I hate how much I love some of these mashups.
Full Mouth
- What… what exactly is it that makes “All Star” a good base for a mashup?
Alanis
- OH SHIT, FULL HOUSE REDUX.
- All the friggin’ audio stings from all the different productions is triggering some truly wild feelings.
Imagine All Star People
- I’ve heard this one before actually, rather amusingly as a video where the only visual was Paul McCartney’s head turned green.
Imma Let It Be
- This is pretty sick, actually.
- I feel like it clashes in a lot of places.
- DRAMATIC SHIFT THREE QUARTERS THROUGH.
Daft Mouth
- Alright, this is the top track so far.
- I’ve always been a sucker for “Walkin’ On the Sun”.
- Yeah, this rules, it’s so sour!!
Like Tears in Chocolate Rain
- This is one to listen to while high as hell.
- The big heavy synth at the bottom with the reverb is something incredible.
Since this album is pulling a bit from everywhere, I'll pull a bit from somewhere:
Apparently Rutger Hauer was voicing Xehanort in Kingdom Hearts for a while??? Nuts!
Also, Tay Zonday is still doing YouTube stuff. Good for him!
No Credit Card
- What a start!!
- Even more sour sounds!!!!
- Helps that I really like “The Power of Love” by Huey Lewis and the News…
Bega Interlude
- Too quiet and short for thoughts.
Melt Everyone
- This is a wild mix of “Smooth”.
- I had forgotten “All Star”…
The Sharpest Tool
- This one’s a bit of a miss, and maybe an indication that I need to give Tool a look and see what they’re about.
Mullet With Butterfly Wings
- I was not expecting this even slightly, so I have been kicked in the teeth.
- The transition both songs make from vocals to instrumentals is jarring and hilarious.
Smooth Flow
- Another one that I love that I hate that I love. Crazy how that works.
- I FORGOT ABOUT “All Star” AGAIN, DAMMIT.
General Thoughts
- I know I’m gonna miss a lot of musical references and silliness here, I’m just strapped in for the ride.
- The man can make a mashup, lemme tell ya.
- It’s kind of amazing how this takes what’s in my brain sometimes and cranks it up super hard.
- It’s a masterpiece, what the hell.
