Album Thoughts
I know Muse has a storied legacy. I'm really only familiar with them from Guitar Hero so uh... here we go!
Song Notes
New Born
- It’s got that semi-music-box thing going that’s really cool.
- OH, that guitar distortion! What a swing!!
- I appreciate the presence of the bass in this - I’ve always had a fondness for the bass guitar and good bass is something that will always draw me into music more.
Bliss
- Some fun use of synth arpeggiation here.
- I wish this felt BIGGER - the reverb does a good job at conveying a bunch of it, but I want more.
Space Dementia
- I love the piano intro here!
- What a dramatic sound…
- I’m getting some Coheed and Cambria? I guess they have a good bit of conceptual overlap.
Hyper Music
- Once again, the guitar is charged, the lyrics are charged, but I wish it were bigger.
Plug In Baby
- The transition from Hyper Music is really excellent - clear without being jarring at all!
Citizen Erased
- I like the drops this song has to the reverb guitar after the intense moments.
Micro Cuts
- Ooh, I love the way those beat shifts hit!
- The falsetto vocals are insane, and this whole song feels very operatic.
- That heavy guitar and drums in the ending is a neat kick in the ass!
Screenager
- Floaty and dreamy.
- This is a nice pace breaker after Micro Cuts.
Darkshines
- The groove here is so good it legitimately makes me want to dance to it. (This is a rarity for me.)
- I appreciate how the funkiness carries through the intense chorus.
Feeling Good
- Now we move into something bluesy! The keyboard usage here is excellent.
- This feels like a pretty excellent cover of the original, I really can’t knock it.
Megalomania
- This is a lot more mellow than the name would have me believe, and I’m not just tainted by Megalovania.
- It is, however, suitably dramatic and climactic.
- I can hear the cinematography happening around this song.
- YOOOOO, BIG BASS SYNTH GOES WOOOAAHHHHEEEE. Perfect usage of it.
- The shift to a major key slaps, too.
General Thoughts
- It feels like they like to start smaller on their songs to build up anticipation for greater impact later.
- I should have made a more concerted effort to listen to Muse way sooner. It’s like… more modern prog rock?
