Album Thoughts
I don't have much history with Steppenwolf, so I'm interested to see where this goes.
Song Notes
Sookie Sookie
- Boy this really sounds “of the time” with the way the guitar and bass and drums all sound.
Everybody’s Next One
- The piano into synth at the start is such a unique little intro to the song!
Berry Rides Again
- Good grief, this is named appropriately.
Hoochie Koochie Man
- Now this is playing the blues archetype.
Born To Be Wild
- The Steppenwolf song. There’s a reason it’s a hit.
Your Wall’s Too High
- I like the pace this song takes.
- Oh, the groove the piano gets into is really nice! The flourishes are playful.
Desperation
- I’m not usually into more downbeat stuff.
- It’s solidly blues-y in a way that carried me through, though.
The Pusher
- Y’know, the vocals are pretty good. Very fitting for the style of music.
- It’s easy to get lost in, and I imagine pretty easy to be stoned to.
A Girl I Knew
- Ahhhh, this is really nice. The chord progression it follows does a lot of things I really quite like!
Take What You Need
- It was alright. I feel like they were trying some more stuff musically here.
The Ostrich
- The way the guitar is more grumbly here is great, and I like the jailbreak feel it’s giving.
- The way the intro peters out makes it feel like they done made it and ended up in a honkey-tonk.
General Thoughts
- Some solid blues rock here. If that’s what you want, you’re gonna have a good time!
- A lot of use of the synth organ in Steppenwolf. It’s something I usually enjoy, and it’s definitely not overdone here.
- I played the bass some as a teenager, and I think that’s just somewhere inside me. I love hearing it ramble and rumble and just play around in the harmonies in the background, and there’s good stuff here for that.
