Album Thoughts
Mongolian folk music has some specialness about it.
I have no Mongolian heritage, none of the steppe in me, but it makes me want to be out there on horseback with a hawk on my arm. I suppose that’s proof enough that it’s a perfect folk embodiment.
Song Notes
This Is Mongol
- Good ol’ chugging riffs.
Yut Hovende
- I’m kind of impressed with myself that I can identify Mongolian musical motifs here, though maybe I should cool it given how much Western metal styling there is.
- I do very much enjoy the use of bowed string instruments here.
Triangle
- What a delightful start!
- It’s so joyous and pleasing, with an almost bird chirping sound in time with the beat.
Teach Me
- This song song feels like it’s miles ahead of what American country music wishes it was.
Sell The World
- The mouth harp is such a cool instrument to use here.
- It feels like we went from country to blues.
- The harsh, raspy vocals really sell the atmosphere.
Black Thunder
- And here’s the thunder promised in the title. Big and rolling.
- I love the depth that every single sound has.
Mother Nature
- This is genuinely comforting and relaxing after the last song.
This Is Mongol (Warrior Souls) (feat. William Duvall of Alice In Chains)
- I was not expecting this track.
- Honestly, Duvall’s vocals work pretty damn well for it.
Black Thunder (feat Serj Tankian and DL From Bad wolves)
- YOOOOO, getting Serj is awesome!!
Mother Nature (feat. (LP))
- This makes me want more female led vocals in these songs.
- Her voice is really cool, and she hits some damn high notes.
General Thoughts
- I really enjoy the throaty vocals.
- This sounds like it would be great music to drink and party and dance to!
- Where was this when I was in highschool? I feel like this is something that would have really opened me up to new music sooner.
- I love the album’s pacing from a motif and atmosphere perspective. It’s nothing groundbreaking, but it’s thoughtful.
