Album Thoughts
I don't enjoy this one quite as much as "nelward one", but it's still strong.
Song Notes
Never Wanna Fall in Love With U
- Just a solid fuckin’ song.
- That outro really is sweet and subtle.
Why Would I?
- A more somber sound than I’m used to from nelward.
- The plucked, mellow guitar is really pleasant.
Innuendo
- It feels straightforward until the chorus, and then it hits a big, slightly sinister pop.
- Good ‘n bloopy.
Ooh Ah
- The guitar, vocals, and basic drums feel real aggressive. I love all the distortion.
- Musically, I feel like there’s less going on here, but it’s still solid.
- That’s right, there is a neat pop at the end!
Let Me Out
- So expansive! It has an underground atmosphere, almost.
Hopscotch
- I really like his use of birdsong here!
If U Think of Me 2020
- An interesting look back at 2018’s version…
- It’s darker and heavier.
Oh me Oh my
- Lullaby vibes
- “Hush little babe…” yeah, I nailed it.
- There’s an interesting buzzy, fuzzy horn element towards the end that really tickles my ear nicely.
Candy
- If it weren’t for the (self-)backing vocals and the effects, this could easily be just a dude playing a guitar on beach. I dunno why I get beach, maybe it’s just the particular strumming style and openness.
- Ending on that ethereal fever dream stuff again.
General Thoughts
- nelward creates very different soundscapes from 2 Mello, but I feel like they both fill out a soundscape very fully and effectively. They know how to utilize the negative auditory space and where to put little flavor pockets.
- The non-music, ambient sounds he includes are a really nice way to add atmosphere and feeling.
