Album Thoughts

My first exposure to Thundercat was on To Pimp a Butterfly - Kendrick Lamar > *To Pimp a Butterfly*, so I'm definitely looking forward to hearing more!

Song Notes

Lost in Space _ Great Scott _ 22-26

  • A very smooth intro to this album. For the complexity of what’s being played, it’s very subtle.

Interstellar Love

  • I did not notice the transition here, and were it not for the tempo increase, would have missed it entirely.

I Love Louis Cole

  • This sounds like an R&B cover of a song from a Kirby game, and it rules.

Black Qualls

  • I love the tone change where things get more defined and the bass gets slappier.

Miguel’s Happy Dance

  • The melody here wanders around a lot. I can’t find where it resolves to at all, which is disorienting in an interesting way.

How Sway

  • Another song from a Kirby game, especially with how frantic it is.

Funny Thing

  • WHOA, the effect on the bass here is insane. It’s so gloopy and weird!!
  • It’s so happy and fun, but like in a wistful way.

Overseas

  • Romance on an airplane, apparently!
  • The skit at the end is amusing.

Dragonball Durag

  • The way the bass climbs up and down gives a nice wavy feel.

How I Feel

  • Ethereal and dreamy. I could see using this one in particular as a D&D background song if I could loop it right…

King of the Hill

  • I feel like the brass could be a lot more present and still maintain the chill atmosphere! It’s great, don’t get me wrong, but there could be so much more!

Unrequited Love

  • Oh man, something about this one, maybe the heartbeat drums, is really hittin’.

Fair Chance

  • Oooh, I had to pause for a while to take care of stuff for work and this was sooooo calming.

Existential Dread

  • More of an interlude, but a really nice one.

It Is What It Is

  • Oh, the intro to this is so nice, especially the way it hangs for a moment before resolving.
  • There’s so something about the way the chromaticism plays in this one is so nice.

General Thoughts

  • This definitely feels like music for people who love technical music, but in like, a really listenable way.
  • It’s very easy to just let this wash over you, feel the currents and just get a bit of a feel for where it’s going.
  • There’s a lot of collaboration on this album, which is really neat. I don’t pay much attention to collab songs, but I do appreciate seeing them.
  • The falsetto vocal harmonies work really nicely to sell a really chill atmosphere.
