Album Thoughts
I don't now how much new I'll have to say about Green Lung. Their songs sound fairly similar, but like... that's not a bad thing.
Songs
The Harrowing
- The meat of this song sounds a lot like the band Boston, a particular track that I’m not remembering (Long Time, I think?), what with the synth and guitar riffs.
Old Gods
- A gold star representative of what I like about Green Lung.
Leaders of the Blind
- I could see this one getting a lot of radio time.
- Organ/synth is getting a lot of play on this album.
- I also appreciate the harmonic vocals in this one!
Reaper’s Scythe
- I think this features the coolest riffs on the album. The almost falsetto singing in this one gives a cool, ominous tone.
Graveyard Sun
- More of that sound-size contrast! The somber beginning is so good, and then it blows up!
- And then there’s more synth in the bridge before the solo, but understated this time.
Black Harvest
- The guitars are really squealing!
- It feels so short, but it’s really impactful, especially with whatever that detuned stringed instrument is.
Upon the Altar
- This one isn’t making much of an impression on me, except that it’s more Green Lung, and I don’t hate that.
You Bear the Mark
- This is the #1 banger on the album for me. It’s so kinetic, and the brightness of it really emphasizes that it’s from the perspective of whatever is has its hold over whoever “bears the mark”.
- The organ is popping off, the low guitar feels overexcited in a good way, and the stuttering drums feel like they’re really making jukes during a chase.
Doomsayer
- The descending upward arpeggiated guitar riff in the chorus is such an interesting note progression!
Born to a Dying World
- Suitably funerary.
- The drums feel like they’re doing a little more, and there’s a little more jazz-blues in here. It’s got an interesting chord progression that I quite enjoy!
- The fall off after the solo has such a soft, somber breathing to it.
General
- This album features the organ a lot more prominently, and they really go nuts with it.
- While there’s definitely some bog-standard Green Lung here, there’s definitely some extra pops here that build some real interest!
