Album Thoughts

I was inspired to pick this album up after I saw the vinyl cover art at an antiques mall. It looks like something that would be airbrushed on the side of a van, which is exactly what I'm expecting to hear from it.

Song Notes

The Sorceress

  • I thought I’d heard this song before on the Brütal Legend soundtrack, but I looked it up and was mistaken.
  • I bet I’ll feel the same thing many more times before this album is over.

Valley Of The Dolls

  • Good ‘n classic sound starting out.
  • The falsetto singing works great when all the rest of the sounds are so low and chugging.

Fata Morgana

  • The instruments remain the same, and the sound is generally the same, but I do appreciate the journeys each song goes on - the rhythm and key shifts keep it feeling dynamic.

Guardian

  • Would it be a fantasy metal album without a slower acoustic-led song in there?

Prelude To Ruin

  • Very dramatic, and aptly named.
  • I can hear the storm brewing.
  • Ooooh, the shift downtempo feels really nicely executed!

Giant’s Lore (Heart Of Winter)

  • I need to figure out what the chord progression near the beginning is, especially with that weird time-signature change.
  • A good guitar solo here, with a lot of good energy.
  • The solo follow-up is also excellent!

Time Long Past

  • A good break and a chance to rest after Giant’s Lore. Quite nice!

Exodus

  • An excellent finale to a good album!

General Thoughts

  • I like the way their songs change seamlessly between rhythms.
  • I also love when a band just gets to be a bunch of nerds singing about fantasy stuff.
  • If you look at the album art, and you aren’t sure what you’re gonna get, you’ve clearly never heard this type of music before. It’s exactly what you’d expect from the label on the can.
