Album Thoughts
I've listened to exactly one Big Data song.
EDITED WHILE LISTENING: And apparently it’s not even close to the best one!!!!
Song Notes
”The Business of Emotion”
- Big loud drums! It makes my headhpones sound a little blown-out, which I’m not opposed to.
- It’s nostalgic, like listening to Techno Syndrome on some old-ass 90’s computer speakers.
”Dangerous”
- This is the exactly one that I’ve heard, and it’s what made me go “Wow, yeah, I should pick this album up to see what else there is.”
- The deep, funky bass, the slow addition of more and more instruments in the soundscape, the moving of sounds in stereo, it’s all Sour Music sounds.
”Clean”
- This one starts real sour. That… guitar?? Wild distortion. Harmonic vocals, lots of sounds, fat bass synth sounds.
- I have to relisten to the beginning, it threw me for a loop. Jesus, the first time the other vocals come in from on high and the synth comes in from on high and from below, hot damn! 0:24 is exactly where a finger pokes the dopamine button in my brain.
- The way the chords descend and at the end of various phrases here is SO STRONG.
- Forget “Dangerous”, this is the track that justifies this album!
”The Glow”
- Ooooh, that bassline is funky.
- This track is so smooth!
- No real notes other than it’s [ V I B E S ] .
”Snowed In”
- Not to denigrate or downplay the quality of this track, it’s really very good, but I needed a moment to come down, lmao.
”Big Dater”
- Going for sour sounds again. The walk down notes during the verse is real nice.
”Automatic”
- The drum syncopation here is real fun. Lotta sounds meant to catch you off-step, and I like it!!
- The chord resolutions feel strong and earned and the vocals are making themselves a highlight, which is impressive in the rest of the soundscape.
”Get Some Freedom”
- Got that rebellious anthem feeling like I’m being advertised a truck or something, but then it slams into a more hard pop sound.
”Sick for Me”
- This is the low point for me, I think, but it’s still pretty good. Not a skip, certainly.
”Perfect Holiday”
- The chord progression here along with the synth feels… arcane, almost? I really enjoy it!
General Thoughts
- I appreciate the presence of so many different vocalists.
- They play with some fun intervals and progressions.
- I’m definitely gonna be finding more Big Data albums.
- SHIT!!! It’s a music project with only one other album, but I absolutely must track down the people who worked on these tracks.
- I wish I’d heard this album when it first came out.
