I don't think I'm capable of being unbiased about 2 Mello
Song Notes
- “already found joy” - Love the almost underwater vibe here.
- “trinity” - Oh, we SAMPLIN’. “I won’t miss” from Rusty is the honest truth about 2 Mello. What a good sample to pick. THE STRING HIIIITS.
- “rolling star feelings” - Right into some sweet, sweet bossa nova. Definitely some smoother Katamari vibes.
- “coastingg” - A good, solitary late-night vibe. I love how it’s playing with the L/R balance, and the steady heartbeat drums.
- “back to ‘04 perc” - I love the way the layers build over the bass and percussion. Welcome back to the saxophone!
- “on my own” - More classic hip-hop to start, here. The fadeout to an uptempo DnB work feels industrious and lightly optimistic? OH, that sine synth solo!
- “it’s a game” - The crickets at the start are so peaceful. THe triplet bass kicks really throw the groove interestingly.
- “we got this” - The flute is singing so soulfully. That last chord progression shift had such sweet subtleties to it.
- “tan camry” - A damn fine boom bap beat. “Enjoyable bars for affordable cars” is a great line. The album title drop at the end rules!
General Thoughts
- I’m excited for this album, given its description of him finishing snippets he’d already had started.
- The man knows how to choose sounds with direct lines to my dopamine receptors.
- The versatility of sound in the first three tracks alone is great.
- Mello’s sax is always a welcome addition to his songs.
